Summer has officially arrived, which means more time enjoying the beautiful outdoors, more BBQs, game nights, visits with friends and family, playtime in the pool, lake or beach, and a more relaxed pace before the busy back-to-school season begins.

Summer break never comes soon enough.   Kids are checked out. Lunches are pathetic.  The snooze button is overused. Life is about survival, and in our home if you check another year off the chart we call you a winner.   Yes. I’m tired. The kids are tired. We are ready for a change.

With summer comes an entirely different array of issues.  Sneezing. Bugs. Too-much sun. Owies. Basically, life happens when winter hibernation is over and we make our way out of the den.  It’s imperative that we make these experiences amazing and refuse all of the nasty chemicals available to ward off what summer has to offer.  Yes, this is my soap box. Yes, don’t put crap on your family. Yes, don’t be part of the statistic that the average woman puts over 515 synthetic chemicals on her body daily.  You get where I’m going.

Anyways, for those of you that have kiddos you know the constant bickering back and forth.  The kind that makes you want to pull your hair out or drop your kids off on the side of the road to walk home (Don’t worry, I’ve never done this.  However, I’ve thought long and hard about it a couple of times pre-doTERRA).

Once doTERRA entered my life I realized all of the different ways the products could work in my favor.  Instead of freaking out on my kids I could just make a really powerful bug repellent to use on them instead.  I’m being completely serious. I call it Bug-Off spray. Every time my kids start fighting I spray them in non-toxic bug spray and kick them outside.

Bug-Off Natural Insect Repellent

Fill a 4 oz glass spray bottle with water and add 20 drops of Purify and 20 drops Terra Shield.

Spray this onto clothing and skin before going outside.

Safe for all ages and individuals.

If you have a problem with bugs entering your home through open doors or cracked screens during the summer, try spraying this around your door frame and the ground.

1 drop of Peppermint on a cotton ball is very effective for placing around door frames and window seals to prevent bugs and rodents entering your home.

Unfortunately, there’s always that annoying bug that meets teeth to skin.  You know the one that swells to the size of a quarter and forces you to dance around the room itching out of control.  Maybe that’s just me…

Insect Sting Salve

Apply 1 drop Purify or Lavender oil directly on bites and stings. This will help to relieve swelling and get rid of the itch.  These oils work great for bee stings, chiggers, ticks, mosquitoes, and other pesky bugs.

This is definitely the season to enjoy the outdoors and go hiking and camping. I don’t know about your family but in mine, someone is ALWAYS getting hurt.  Accidents and acts of clumsiness happen often when we’re outdoors and if I’m not prepared the fun ends abruptly. “Mom, I scraped my knee.” Mom, I cut my finger.”  You get the idea.

1 drop lavender, melaleuca and frankincense are all safe to apply directly to cuts, scrapes and wounds.  I have found them to be very effective in stopping bleeding, easing pain, cleaning the wound, and preventing scarring.  Apply throughout the day as needed.

Hiking is also a favorite past-time in our home.  Our dogs love an early morning hike in the mountains and demand that we maintain a steady pace.  There’s no time for slow walkers which at times creates an irritating blister. Talk about buzz-kill.  Let’s be honest: nothing ruins a nice summer hike faster than someone with a blister.

1 drop of Purify or Lavender oil directly on the blister to prevent infection or growth, and to start healing.

***Bonus tip*** massage a drop of lavender into your dog’s sore muscles for comfort

After a long, cold winter I CAN’T wait to get in the sun.  With that always comes a sunburn.

Even though we want to do our best to prevent and avoid sunburns, they happen to the best of us. To get some relief and expedite healing, I recommend making a spray bottle with coconut oil, distilled water, 20 drops lavender, 20 drops frankincense and 20 drops of peppermint to cool the sunburn.  Apply this multiple times throughout the day.  If you want something for your face make the spray without peppermint.

You can also apply frankincense and lavender directly to the sunburn.

There are so many different ways you can use the oils to increase your fun this summer season.  Reach out and grab a copy of my summertime recipes ebook.
