This is about to get real and raw… as much as I talk about self-care, mine has been lacking this season.
We just moved (which is stressful enough) but to top it off, we moved into a house still under construction! With the holidays in full swing, it’s been all I can do to keep my head above water.
But while feeling guilty about not carving time out for myself, I realized self-care can come in all shapes and sizes. It doesn’t have to look a certain way or be the same routine every season.
I know many of you have a lot going on between the holidays, school activities, and travel, so I decided to pull together some hectic-schedule approved self-care moments.
Mini Self-Care Moments You Can Have On The Go
‘Tis the season for travel! So first things first, here are the oils that always make it into my bag… no matter where we’re going.

- Citrus Bliss
- Yarrow Pom
Every day I put some Balance on the bottom of my feet to keep me grounded, Frankincense and Copaiba under my tongue for anxiety and mood support, and Melaleuca around my ears and sinuses to keep me dry.
I also mix Rose and Breathe on my chest to keep my heart open and myself in a feminine space.
Depending on the day I can also use lavender and serenity to help me sleep, or citrus bliss to keep me up and cheerful.
As I was mid-morning routine with my oils, I realized this practice itself is a mini self-care moment. Not only does it set aside time for me the second I wake up, it supports me all throughout the day.
No matter where you’re going or what you’re doing this season, stash a few oils in your bag and have a self-care moment first thing in the morning.
Recognize The Small Moments
The great news about self-care is that it doesn’t have to happen by yourself. A few nights ago, we were all sitting around our Christmas tree talking about the day, and I realized something… that moment was self-care for me!
I was learning about my kids day, connecting with my husband, and just enjoying our new house. The best part? No one even realized I was having a self-care moment! They were just being.
It’s so easy to discount small moments as we speed throughout our day, but try to recognize them for what they are or what they could be — mini self-care sessions.
Some of my other favorite (untraditional) self-care moments are…
- Brushing and feeding the horses with my kids
- Watching my son and husband shovel the driveway and talk about their day
- Cooking or baking with my family
- Feeding the chickens with my kids or husband
- Calling a close friend or family member
- Listening to a book on audio while wrapping presents
These moments are all going to happen regardless, so I choose to allocate them to self-care. I choose to connect with my kids while we’re doing the “chore” of feeding and caring for the animals.
I choose to appreciate nature and take a deep, full breath of mountain air while we’re skiing. I choose to make recipes that make me feel connected to family members no longer around.
Self-care doesn’t have to be something we try to fit in… it’s happening all around us, every day.
So the next time you’re feeling guilty for not squeezing in a bubble bath (I get it, my tub hasn’t been hooked up in weeks due to construction) remember that you can practice mini self-care moments no matter where you are.
Redefine what self-care means, appreciate the small moments flying by, and always carve some time out for your oil session — even if it’s just to put some Balance on the bottom of your feet before you tackle the day.
